Preface: So a couple weeks ago I challenged Zack to read five books and he challenged me to read five books as well. The first one that I decided to read was Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I’m letting him choose the next one although it will probably be awhile before I get to it. My own TBR pile is sort of overwhelming as it is. As a side note Zack lent me his copy and it sort of looks loved in the way of it being a favorite book that you pass around to everyone because you liked it so much. I’m not sure if he did this or not but that’s the look of it. My well loved books just look worn because I’ve read them multiple times or I’ve accidentally cracked the spines to them not because I passed them around. I use to be pretty stingy like that but I have gotten better.
Anyways on with the review….
Now first off I’m not even going to pretend that I know how to write a book review because I don’t. I’m also really bad at describing what books are about as I think I’ve said before. I also should say that while I like Neil Gaiman I don’t love Neil Gaiman. I just can’t seem to get in to his books to the point of “oh I can’t put this down!” however I quite enjoyed this book. I wasn’t really able to read it as quickly as I wanted to because school is kicking my butt.
This book starts out with Richard in what is known as London Above and he is living an ordinary life. (ok that’s what the back of the book says whatever!) Then he finds Door who has been hurt and basically after that his whole world gets flipped upside down. Amazon probably can do a better job on telling you what it’s about.I really only have a couple things to point out in this book one being that I think the villains Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar are quite possibly some of the creepiest villains I have ever read. Like literally after reading parts where they were present I got shivers or rather I wished I hadn’t read it at night time when I am about to turn off the lights. Not because it was really scary or anything but more that I just wouldn’t want to run in to them in a dark ally or even in the day light or dream about them and those thoughts made me nervous.
The second being that I think this:
"From the darkness at the crown of the bridge came a gentle noise, like a rustle or a sign. A handful of irregular quartz beads pattered down the curve of the bridge toward them. Richard picked on up."
And what happened afterwards sort of made my heart break. I think Gaiman has no qualms about killing off certain characters right when you become attached to them, which makes an interesting read. The only other time I can think that I had this very reaction was with Sirius Black in Harry Potter. Oh J.K. you broke my heart with that one, you really did. (Side note she smashed it to smithereens in Half Blood Prince but we’re not talking about Harry Potter right now, that is a completely different entry)
I’m not actually sure if this book is suppose to be young adult or adult but I don’t think it’s a book for kids. I think there were some pretty creepy parts as well as a little graphic but I liked it and would definitely recommend it to other people. Also I would now even more so like to book a trip to London.
"I can't help it, Alexis," he said "I want to make you think too much...and then I want to hear the things you've been thinking too much."
I sadly can not seem to post a picture of the book right now which is to bad because the cover is just very pretty. It's kind of a weird cover but still hauntingly pretty and is what made me pick it up in the first place. I guess I could take an actual picture of it but I'm to lazy to go through all the trouble of it. Maybe later I can try to fix it and put it in.
Or is this a total What Claudia Kishi Wore moment?*
...Neferet is so damn beautiful that it's like she has the ability to focus all the light in the room on herself. She was wearing a simple black dress and totally to die for black boots. She had on her silver Goddess path earrings and, as always, the silver embroidered Goddess rested over her heart. She didn't exactly look like the Goddess Nyx-who I swear I'd seen in a vision the same day I was Marked- but she had the Goddess's aura of strength and confidence. I'll just admit it. I wanted to be her.**
I should mention that when I say it's a Claudia Kishi moment I don't mean to say that her outfit was completely outrageous. I mean to say that it was described in such a manner that I thought I was reading BSC book.
*If you don't know who Claudia Kishi is then you don't know about the Babysitter's Club and that in turn leads me to believe that you didn't grow up in the US(I don't know if this was big in Europe or elsewhere) in the 80's and 90's reading YA books, your male, or you had your head under a rock, which I mean in all niceness!
** excerpt from Betrayed by P.C. Cast & Kristen Cast (I bet Kristen grew up reading the Babysitter's Club series) the second book in the House of NIght Series
There is a game I discovered on a blog called Lost in Books. She picks a topic and then you have to find a quote in a book that fits that topic. This week is Weddings, the thing is I just so happen to be re-reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows(J.K. Rowling) and last night I just so happen to have read Chapter 8 The Wedding so that is where I got my quote from.
"He had never been to a wedding before, so he could not judge how wizarding celebrations differed from Muggle ones, though he was pretty sure that the latter would not involve a wedding cake topped with two model phoenixes that took flight when the cake was cut, or bottles of champagne that floated unsupported through the crowd."
He hangs up without saying good-bye, which makes me smile. That's Colin, in a nutshell: already rushing to come back home to me."
*
"My mother used to tell me that when push comes to shove, you always know who to turn to. That being a family isn't a social construct but an instinct."
*
"Sometimes you can see things happen right in front of your eyes and still jump to the wrong conclusions."
*
"It makes Faith think of a hammock in their yard, a web of rope that she thought would unravel the first time she leaned back on it, but that managed to support her all the same."
*
"I don't think we get a choice in who we fall for," Ian whispers. "I think we just do."
Summary: Mariah is going through a bitter divorce with her husband. Her daughter Faith is there witnessing all of what's going on between to two. Soon after the divorce Faith starts seeing God, performing miracles and developing Stigmata. I'm only about half way through, a custody battle also is in the mix of the book. So far I really like it although the ex-husband, Colin, angers me.
"You don't have to yell...this isn't a train station. We're in a tiny car."
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
So I can relate to Mia...alot. She's just like this real character to me and now I'm sad that the series is over, but I liked the way she ended it. So there's usually quotes from the book that I love or just make me laugh out loud and I thought I would give you my 10 Favorite.
"I have nothing against Sean Penn. I don't even mind that he ended up divorcing Madonna. I mean, I still like Shia LaBeouf even though he chose to star in Transformers, which turned out to be a movie about robots from space.
That Talk.
Which is just as bad as choosing to divorce Madonna, if you ask me."
(Well if you put it that then yeah the movie doesn't sound that great..BUT it is great because it IS about Robtos from space that talk...I mean seriously how can you not find that movie awesome? Ok moving on)
"I wish I could say when Michael's dark eyes met mind, I was completely cool and collected about seeing him again after all this time, and that I laughed airily and said all the right things. I wish I could say after having pretty much single-handedly brought democracy to a country I happen to be a princess of, and written a four-hundred-page romance novel, and gotten into every college to which I applied (even if it's just because I'm a princess), that I handled meeting Michael for the first time again after throwing my snowflake necklace in his face almost two years ago with total grace and aplomb.
But I totally didn't."
"And now Rocky is begging me to watch Dora the Explorer with him. I understand that millions of kids love Dora and have learned to read or whatever from her show. But I wouldn't mind if Dora fell off a cliff and took her little pals with her"
(My mom says she feels this way about Spongebob)
"Meet me inside the Edge of the Icepack penguin enclosure in at four fifteen" she says, sounding just like Kim Possible. If Kim Possible ever asked people to meet her inside penguin enclosures.
(The fact that Kim Possible is mentioned makes this one of the best quotes in the book, at least to me it does.)
"Lana says J.P. makes Matt Damon from the Bourne movies look like Oliver from Hannah Montana"
"But he's looking for love in all the wrong places. Like fancy underwear catalogs
At least he knows enough not to date while he's campaigning"
"Inside the envelope with the letter was a little Princess Leia action figure USB flash drive. (they make these?) For me to store my novel on, since he was right-I never back up my computer's hard drive.
The sight of it-it's Princess Leia in her Hoth outfit, my favorite of her costumes (how had he remembered?) brought tears to my eyes."
"And I'm going to tell the truth: I didn't like that Sean Penn movie Into the Wild so much.
Yes! I know it was critically acclaimed. I know it won all these awards! It's very sad that a boy is dead and all. But I thought the movie Enchanted, with the singing princess and the chipmunk and the people dancing in Central Park, was cuter.
So there!"
"No. The answer was no, I was not all right. I nearly got knocked out. Knocked out by desire! Desire for forbidden dissimilar molecules"
"But as you age, you lose other, even more important things, like friends-hopefully only bad friends, who maybe weren't as good for you as you once thought. With luck, you'll be able to hang on to your true friends, the ones who were always there for you....even when you thought they weren't.
Because friends like that are more precious then all the tiaras in the world"
Alright now that I've bored you thoroughly with all those quotes I'll go back to my studying. It was a good break for me though!
All quotes are from Forever Princess (Princess Diaries 10) by Meg Cabot which all books are written in journal style.
Henry: I've never been good at finding things, I'm really good at losing things.

Henry:
I've spent my whole life... wanting something... and doing my very best
not to find it. Never even going near the places it might be... And
suddenly, I've got the goddamn thing practically chained around my
neck.
Lucy:
What are you talking about?
Henry:
You. You. You're the, you're the... You're, you're- you're the goddamn
thing. Ahhh, uh. I mean... You're, you're. I can't describe you... uhh,
I don't, I don't write that kind of s**t, I write... You know, the
people who write, who write the real books, the love books, and the
poems, and even those stupid little novels with the hunky guys on the cover...
Lucy:
Stop...
"Actions speak louder then words."
Hodgins: We still with each other?
Angela: I'm not planning to break up.
Hodgins: Even though I'd asked you to marry me and you said no.
Angela: That's right.
Hodgins: If I'd asked properly would you have said yes.......you're not going to answer that.
Hodgins: Why does everything have to be so damn hard?
Angela: How else would you know if anything was worth anything?

Booth: Your hand hurt?
Bones: A little
Booth: So drop mentality...teams not all bad.
Bones: Why are you telling me this?
Booth: You said we were all stunted adolescents who take children's games to seriously.
Bones: I never meant you.
Booth: Bones...
Bones: What?
Booth: Bones I'm one of those guys.
Bones: No you aren't...you don't play at being a warrior. You are a warrior. You play at being a warrior. Everyday you are definitely a fully developed man.
Booth: Yeah ok ok you leave the tip.
Bones: Even Cutler knew you were lying when you said you treated women like that under the bleachers.
Booth: Oh and you believe him?
Bones: Yes you still remember that first girls name...
